Accept yourself, love yourself, and keep moving forward. If you want to fly, you have to give up what weighs you down.
We officially made a year TODAY!
First of all, I’d like to thank everyone whom decided to come along on this journey with me. Your support and inspiration has been the driving force for an amazing year!
I’ve learned so much from family, friends and fellow bloggers from across the world; I consider myself very blessed.
“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” – Walt Disney
I can’t even begin to tell you how exciting, uncomfortable, freeing and daring this has been for me. Yes, all those emotions come into mind at this moment, BUT I did it!
I completed a year of pushing myself to not giving up, multitasking between family/job obligations and blog while trying to stay true to what it was I wanted to convey on my small piece of internet space.
I call this year a success for Nzuri N Simplicity and I’m looking forward to bigger and better opportunities in the new year.
While I really enjoy this journey, I should also mention that maintaining a blog is a lot of work. From creating content to attempting to get my blog noticed takes a lot of effort. There are post planning, photo shoots, editing the photos, buying clothing (unless you’re a sales shopper like me, it can get expensive), social media interaction and more, which all can take up a lot of time; if you really want to succeed at this business.
Yes, you must run it like your business.
“If you are working on something that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. The vision pulls you.” – Steve Jobs
So, I wanted to share how I got through this year and what I’ve learned along the way:
1. Celebrate the failures and successes.
While I’d like to say that it only takes several photos and we’re done per style post, that is simply not true. We have to take so many photos to get the desired finish and on occasions have had to just take the loss of even getting the one we want.
I’ve talked about one photo shoot I’d done here that we just couldn’t get the concept we were looking for but in the end, we sucked it up as a win, posted the pictures we liked most and moved forward.
Sometimes, we’ve let photos sit for awhile, then come back for a second look and discovered something we could work with. Yet, there are other times, we’ve posted blurred and bad lighting photos because I just decided to show it all!
So, we celebrate not giving up. We’d started researching on how to take better pictures (basically me getting comfortable in front of the camera), better lighting, looking into apps that assist with editing and finally, learning my camera!
2.Community is key.
Well this speaks for itself! There is absolutely no way I could’ve made it through this year without my entire family, clan, posse’ or gang!
From my husband and son encouraging me to start back blogging to my 8 year old rider/photographer to my in-loves sending feedback/quotes/ suggestions (mom, dad, grandmom, aunts, cousins) to my (mom’s sisters) aunites, cousins cheering for me on the sidelines to my friends reading post and sending comments to Mrs. Daenel befriending me and introducing me to the fabulous Ageless Style Ladies (entire group of supporters) to my WordPress followers/supporters/subscribers and instagramers to my linkup bloggers that remind me to continue to be apart of the party to get more exposure and looks at the blog.
I couldn’t have done this full year without any of you all! Your words of encouragement truly touch my spirit.
I’ve learned that when you share your dreams with people who are truly interested in your success, doors will genuinely open. Networking is not a bad thing when you find the right supporters.
3.Do YOU, even when YOU can’t grasp what the f$$k YOU want to do.
Excuse my language, but really, this is how I felt at times. I knew that when I started back blogging, fashion and style, was what I wanted to talk about; but I really didnt know how I wanted to portray or deliver my message. Not only do I want to show my style, I want to show my audience that pictures can be altered, inhanced, modified but with all of that we can still show our natural beauty and that’s OK too.
I wanted to show how I would wear an ensemble for my 4″11 stature while also encouraging others to show their own styles with what there working with as well. We come in these beautiful, complicated packages in which we just want to display who we really are, show our creativitness and differences freely.
“It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.” – Vince Lombardi
At times all of the aforementioned was hard for me to convey, yet I’m hoping it came across in the end. Style is how you feel and who YOU are, it’s all YOUR perception and interpretation.
4. Be patient and kind to yourself.
When I initially started back I had the IT web tech on speed dial for a couple of months before my first post! The start was really a struggle to get back into, especially when I had post that would magically disappear. My site would have multiple messages about spam, people trying to break into my account, a bad connection and more… It was trying but I really wanted to get this right.
Learning my blogs dashboard over again was seriously all I wanted to do and when I finally stopped pressuring myself to get it all at once, it was like a ray of sunshine, literally; with angels singing.
I took the time to actually READ about my blog themes functions, googled information website designs and asked questions to anyone that would listen; it all started to come together. I’ve found genuine people in this field that authentically want to help with no agenda; awh inspiring.
Yes, we can all shine like diamonds!
5. Don’t wait on anyone.
Remember, you can do whatever you set your mind to do. Will it be hard work (yes), will you have failures (yes), will it take time (yes); is it worth it (YES). But you can’t sit around hoping and wishing things are going to change, you have to put forth the action and effort to make things move. You can’t wait for opportunites to come your way, you have to go get them!
I’ve had opportunities for brand collaborations yet some were not the image I wanted to display on the blog. So, this year I will take the iniative to seek out those I’d wish to promote. There are other opportunities in the works as well, it will all work in my favour; I’m declaring it.

Again, thank you all for your continued encouragement and supports throughout the year, I am so appreciative!
Until next time, thanks for stopping by and remember to keep styling YOU because your STYLE matters!
